Basics of Child Development

Witnessing your child thrive and grow is a rewarding experience, and there are things we, as parents, can help encourage their development. It all starts with understanding the basics of child development.

From their first smiles to their first steps, every milestone in a child’s life marks an incredible journey of growth and learning.

At Neuropedia, our team of pediatric neurologists in Dubai will help you understand child development basics, allowing you to support your child’s developmental milestones and foster their overall well-being.

Childhood Stages of Development

In general, the stages of early childhood development are as follows:

Newborn, 0 to 3 months

A newborn baby responds to stimuli like sound, light, and changes in temperature in their surroundings.

A social smile develops at around 6 weeks of age. They can turn the head and upper body and follow the faces at close distance.

Infant, 3 to 6 months

As young babies grow, they begin to sit without support, recognize familiar faces, babble, and demonstrate strong neck muscles and head control.

They also start reaching for and grasping small toys, like rattles.

Infant, 6 to 9 months

These babies can sit and bounce with ease. They respond to their names when called and display gestures, such as hand flapping when excited.

Parents can start introducing a variety of solid foods as their baby teeth start to come in.

Infant, 9 to 12 months

During this stage, babies begin to point, clap, engage in games like peek-a-boo, and select toys that catch their attention.

They also start crawling and can stand with support. Some babies may even take their first steps.

Toddler, 1 to 3 years

Toddlers progress to standing without support and eventually learn to climb and walk independently.

They begin to wave, follow simple instructions, and communicate using single words, simple sentences, and short paragraphs. Additionally, they start to clap and draw with crayons or markers.

Preschooler, 3 to 5 years

As young children grow, they transition away from typical baby behaviors. They become more refined in movement, speech, language, emotions, and thinking. They engage in activities like skipping, running, hopping, and drawing and express themselves in three or more sentences.

While potty training typically finishes during this stage, nighttime accidents are common among preschoolers, even within the same family.

Throughout these stages, cognitive, social and physical development in early childhood progresses steadily, shaping a child’s overall development.

Supporting Child Development

Using Positive Parenting Practices

Families are crucial in supporting child development, often being the first to identify any developmental concerns. Through daily routines and interactions, families can support all areas of their child’s development:

  • Responding to children in a predictable way
  • Showing warmth and sensitivity
  • Having routines and household rules
  • Sharing books and talking with children
  • Prioritizing health and safety
  • Using appropriate discipline without harshness

Parents embracing these practices can promote their child’s overall health and success in the emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and social aspects of life.

Monitoring Child Development

Parents, grandparents, and caregivers are vital in nurturing a child’s growth and learning. By observing developmental milestones from birth, you can:

  • Celebrate child development
  • Discuss their development with healthcare providers and caregivers
  • learn what to expect next in their development
  • Identify any concerns early on

Meeting a Pediatric Neurologist

Consider consulting a pediatric neurologist if you have concerns about your child’s development, particularly in areas like motor skills, speech, or behavior.

They provide valuable insights and access to support services to address your child’s unique needs and optimize their development.
